The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting everyone around the globe right now, so it’s important that you have an understanding of how COVID-19 is spread, what the symptoms are, and the ways to reduce the risk of infection. In this module we also look at ways to reduce the risk of cross infection when serving customers and how to handle potential conflicts that may arise.

What is COVID-19? (01:56)

The COVID-19 virus is a coronavirus that causes respiratory infections. It affects all people of all ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds. It can be dangerous for any person. Practicing good hygiene is the best defence against COVID-19 and against most other viruses. If you experience symptoms, you should report immediately to your employer and seek medical advice.

To reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect yourself and others from infection, it’s important to follow good personal hygiene.

COVID-19 in Hospitality (02:07)

In hospitality venues, transmission of COVID-19 can occur from close contact between people, and through commonly touched surfaces such as tables, bathroom facilities and menus. If you haven’t already watched our What is COVID-19 video, you should do so now.

Contactless Procedures for Hospitality (02:01)

Cross contamination in the context of COVID-19 is the transfer of the virus from one surface to another. To reduce the risk of cross contamination in the hospitality environment, it’s important to introduce as many contactless procedures as possible.

Effective Cleaning and Disinfecting (02:33)

COVID-19 can last for different amounts of time on different types of surfaces. For example, it is thought to last up to three hours in the air, 24 hours on cardboard, two to three days on plastics, up to four days on surfaces. This means that effective cleaning and disinfecting is vital in stopping the spread of the virus.

COVID-19 and Customer Conflict (01:43)

The COVID-19 virus can create stress and anxiety for people, particularly when they are in public places. Many people are anxious about contracting the disease from unknown sources. As such, some of your customers may in a heightened state of anxiety. They may be less tolerant, and they may question you about your health and safety procedures. This can lead to conflict, but there are strategies you can use to avoid conflict.
